Cookeville police warn of fake warrant calls

The Cookeville Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam in which a caller claims to be “Officer Long” and demands money to resolve an active warrant.

Police said Sept. 14 that several residents had reported receiving the calls. The caller’s claim is a scam, the department said.

Cookeville police will never call and demand payment to take care of an active warrant. Anyone receiving such a call should hang up without providing personal or financial information. Do not send money, buy gift cards or make any other payment.

Residents who are unsure whether a caller works for the department can call Cookeville police directly at 931-526-2125 to verify the claim. The department encouraged residents to share the warning with family members and others who may be vulnerable to the scam.
