SCAM ALERT

by Morgan Abston

PUTNAM COUNTY, TN— Sheriff Eddie Farris and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office have been
made aware of another scam circulating in Putnam County.

This specific scam involves individuals receiving a text message claiming to be from the State of Ten-
nessee DMV. The message states that it is a “final warning” for an outstanding traffic ticket and in-
structs the recipient to clink on a link to submit payment. THIS IS A SCAM.

Do not click on the link and do not respond to the message. Government agencies will not request pay-
ment or personal or financial information through text messages.

Sheriff Farris wants to remind the public that, “Scammers are constantly looking for new ways to trick
people into giving up personal or financial information. If you receive a message like this do not click
the link. Delete the message and call us at the Sheriff’s Office if you have any concerns.”
How to prevent yourself from text scams:
• NEVER click links in text messages from an unknown
number.

• ALWAYS contact your Sheriff’s Office if you are un-
sure if it is a scam.

• NEVER provide personal or financial information
through a text message.
• ALWAYS delete the message and block the number.
